The Second Punchline

When you’re just hanging out with your friends, by all means, go with your first joke—your first quip—your first thought of a punchline.

But when you’re onstage, the audience has already thought of that first joke. You, as the professional in the room, need to come up and go with the second joke.

Having the second or third option of a punchline is often what separates the pros from everyone else.

The Audience’s Role

Give the audience space. Let the audience have their moment.

We would never steamroll or interrupt a fellow actor who is doing their part and delivering their lines on cue and in time.

Why would we ever interrupt an audience as they are trying to play their role and do their part?

Ride the wave of applause.

Ride the wave of laughter.

It’s a great ride. One to be relished.

Comedy and Tragedy and Hurt

Tragedy gets hurt all the time. Physically and emotionally.

Meanwhile…

Comedy never actually gets hurt. Physically or emotionally.
