The Main Thing

Posted in Got Me Thinkin', Nuts & Bolts Stuff, Thoughts on Leadership on July 25, 2016 by RobALott

Let the main thing be the main thing. Let the extras be the extra.

You have a full-time contract? Fulfill it. You have a job where you’re expected to be there forty hours a week? Be there. On time. Every time.

Do this one thing and you will rise head and shoulders above your peers.

(If this makes you nervous or sounds boring, you might be the kind of person who shouldn’t have a “main thing”. And that’s ok.)

Funny

Fast isn’t funny.

Subtle isn’t funny.

Loud isn’t funny.

Big isn’t funny.

Funny is funny.

Creative on Cue

Don’t ask your team to be creative on cue. Rarely does being creative on cue result in anyone’s best work.

Allow an incubation period.

Ask your team to be creative on schedule. Present the problem or idea in need of creativity, then set an ambitious deadline. This is where the truly great ideas live.

Get In There! Go! Begin! Start!

“Many of the things I’ve done in life have mainly been self-taught. I had never worked with puppets…and even when I began on television, I really didn’t know what I was doing. I’m sure this was a good thing, because I learned as I tackled each problem. I think if you study—if you learn too much of what others have done—you may tend to take the same direction as everybody else.” -Jim Henson

Get in there! Just start!

Of course I think learning is important, but not at the cost and loss of action! Go!

You have the idea. You know enough. You are ready. You can start.

So,start.

Ready! Set!! Go!!!
