Why Line Readings Are a Waste of Time

Your voice is specific to you. No one will ever be able to match your voice perfectly.

While we might have shared experiences, our reactions, and our emotions are specific to each of us as well. Along with our voice, no one will ever be able to match our experiences, reactions, and emotions perfectly.

For this reason, giving a line reading (“Say it like this…”) is useless.

This is the job of the director: to help actors find shared experiences that will drive their emotions and in turn will support the character and story.

This approach certainly takes longer, but the results will be consistent and, more importantly, truthful and committed.
